Despite two interruptions due to rain, Rafael Nadal was able to maintain his concentration to win his fifth title in six years at the Rome Masters, defeating compatriot David Ferrer with a score of 7-5, 6-2 in Sunday�s game. The win, combined with his recent victory at Monte Carlo, demonstrates that Nadal is the best player on clay at the moment, tying the historical record of Andre Agassi in the Masters 1000, with 17 titles. Moreover, with this victory, the king of clay added the 38th title of his career and his 27th on clay.
The final at Rome marked the fourteenth match between Nadal and Ferrer, a career in which statistics have favored the Majorcan � who has won 10 of the last thirteen games. Ferrer only had three victories over the world No.3, one of which was at Stuttgart in 2004.
The match began with Nadal and Ferrer exchanging shots, but neither was able to break his opponent's service. However, during this first set, the clash was suspended due to rain with the score at 4-4. When the match resumed,., Nadal came out more focused than his rival and took advantage of Ferrer�s discomposure in the first service points to break his service and take the first set with a 7-5 score.
In that first set the world No.3 had 16 winner points against 10 winners from the world No.12.
The second set began to Ferrer�s advantage, to which the Spaniard responded with his third ace of the match. �It�s unbelievable to win five (titles) here. This win was good despite the weather and gives me confidence about my game on clay. I am 23 and sure 17 is a very important number for me. But these tournaments are very difficult and some of the best players in the world are there�Probably I didn�t play as well as Monte Carlo. I played well, but not as well as Monte Carlo,custom made, but the important thing is winning,personalized bobbleheads,� said Nadal.
Now Nadal will take a week off before competing at the Madrid Masters, the last preparation event before the French Open.
